Rose begins her travels with the new Doctor. And what more appropriate place for Rose to go with the new Doctor, but New Earth? David Tennant shows in this episode why he was such a great choice to play the Doctor. He shows the excitement of what it is to be a Time Lord and travel through time and space.
I love that this episode has a tie-in to the second episode of season one, "The End of the World." We meet Cassandra again. Surprising, yes, I know, after what happened to her in "The End of the World." We see her little mechanical spiders again. In this episode she has a new companion to moisturize her, Chip. We also get to see the Face of Boe again. It's so much more significant to see him when you find out the truth of the Face of Boe in a future episode. But I won't spoil that for you here.
The scene where the Doctor and Rose are in separate elevators getting "disinfected" is so funny. The Doctor is just taking it in stride, and Rose is freaking out. Great bit.
The best part of this episode is when Cassandra "inhabits" Rose and Doctor's bodies. When she is moving back and forth from Rose to Doctor the acting is so great. I especially love when she goes into the Doctor's body the first time.
This episode reminds me of how much I miss the Russell Davies era of Doctor Who. I like the stand-alone episodes where the Doctor takes his companion to a new world, in another time, to see the universe. Stephen Moffat has had some good stand-alone episodes, and I don't mind having a large story arc throughout the season, but I don't like to have some kind of mystery that you have to figure out through the season. I'd rather just have great episodes that don't keep bringing up more and more questions. The only question from this episode is: what is the Face of Boe's secret? Hmm.
Quotes:
Rose: So, where are we going?
Doctor: Further than we've ever gone before.
Rose: I'll never get used to this. Never. Different ground beneath my feet. Different sky.
Rose: Can I just say, traveling with you... I love it.
Doctor: Me too.
Doctor: So, the year five billion, the sun expands, the Earth gets roasted.
Rose: That was our first date.
Doctor: We had chips.
Doctor: It's New New York. Strictly speaking, it's the fifteenth New York since the original. So, that makes it New New New New New New New New New New New New New New New New York.
Rose: You're so different.
Doctor: New new Doctor.
Cassandra: Rose Tyler! I knew it! That dirty blonde assassin.
Cassandra: At last I can be revenged on that little ---
[cut to Rose and the Doctor]
Rose: A bit rich, coming from you.
Doctor: I can't help it. I don't like hospitals. They give me the creeps.
Doctor: No shop. I like the little shop.
Doctor: That's where I'd put the shop - right over there.
Doctor [from the elevator]: Watch out for the disinfectant.
Rose [from outside the elevator]: Watch out for what?
Doctor: The disinfectant!
Rose: The what!
Doctor: The disin... Oh, you'll find out.
Rose: Um, ward 26. Thanks.
Doctor: Nice place. No shop downstairs. I'd have a shop. Not a big one, just a shop. So people can... shop.
Sister Jatt: The hospital is a place of healing.
Doctor: Well, a shop does some people a world of good. Not me. Other people.
Doctor: Petrified regression. He's turning to stone. There won't be a cure for a thousand years. He might be up and about, but only as a statue.
Novice Hame: He's thousands of years old, some say millions, although that's impossible.
Doctor: Oh, I don't know. I like impossible.
Rose: Don't you come anywhere near me, Cassandra.
Cassandra: What do you think I'm going to do, flap you do death?
Rose: Yea, but what about Gollum?
Cassandra: It's goodbye trampoline and hello blondie!
Rose/Cassandra: I'm a chav!*
Rose/Cassandra: Look at me! From class to brass.
Rose/Cassandra: It's like living inside a bouncy castle.
Rose/Cassandra: That man, he's the Doctor. The same Doctor with a new face. The hypocrite! I must get the name of his surgeon.
Rose/Cassandra: How does she speak?
Chip: Old earth cockney.
Rose (on her cell to the Doctor): Wotcha.
Doctor: Where've you been? How long does it take to get to ward 26?
Rose: I'm on my way, guv'nor. I shall proceed up the apples and pears.
Duke of Manhattan (to the Doctor): Come in! Don't be shy.
Fran Clovis: Any friendship expressed by the Duke of Manhattan does not constitute a form of legal contract.
Doctor: How on Earth did you cure him?
Matron Casp: How on New Earth, you might say.
Rose/Cassandra: I can't Adam and Eve it.
Doctor: What's... what's with the new voice.
Rose/Cassandra: Oh, I don't know. Just larking about. New Earth. New me.
Doctor: Well, I can talk. New new Doctor.
Doctor: Yea. Still got it.
Doctor: Intensive care. Certainly looks intensive.
Doctor: Just let Rose go, Cassandra.
Rose/Cassandra: I will. As soon as I find someone younger and less common.
Rose/Cassandra: You're not exactly nuns with guns. You're not even armed.
Matron Casp: Who needs arms when we have claws.
Doctor/Cassandra: Oh my, this is... different.
Rose: Cassandra?
Doctor/Cassandra: Goodness me, I'm a man. Yum. So many parts. And hardly used. Oh! Ah! And two hearts! Oh, baby, I'm beating out a samba.
Doctor (to Matron Casp): Go and play with a ball of string.
Rose/Cassandra: Oh, chav-tastic again.
Doctor/Cassandra: No matter how difficult the situation, there is no need to shout.
Rose/Cassandra: They're so alone. They keep reaching out, just to hold us. All their lives, and they've never been touched.
Rose/Cassandra: The lifts aren't working.
Doctor: Not moving. Different thing.
Doctor (to Rose/Cassandra): If you're so desperate to stay alive, why don't you live a little?
Rose/Cassandra: You're completely mad. I can see why she likes you.
Doctor: I'm cooking up a cocktail. I know a bit about medicine myself.
Rose/Cassandra: What about you?
Doctor: I've got an appointment. The Doctor is in.
Doctor: Pass it on!
Rose/Cassandra: Did you kill them? All of them?
Doctor: No. That's your way of doing things. I'm the Doctor, and I cured them.
Doctor: Like will out! Hah!
Doctor: You were supposed to be dying.
Face of Boe: There are better things to do today. Dying can wait.
Doctor: That is enigmatic. That is... that is text-book enigmatic.
Rose: Hello.
Doctor: Hello. Welcome back.
Chip/Cassandra: I'm a walking doodle.

Favorite Doctor Who Episodes: The Christmas Invasion
It's David Tennant's first episode as the Doctor. And he starts out with a bang. I remember the first time I saw this episode. I was still sad that Christopher Eccleston left the series, and I didn't know who David Tennant was. I felt he had a lot to prove. This episode was a great introduction to Tennant's Doctor. By the time it was over, I was more than willing to give him a chance and keep watching Doctor Who. And, six or seven years later, I'm still glad I did.
The 10th Doctor is asleep through much of his first episode (he's in the middle of regenerating), but once he wakes up and is ready to take on the Sycorax - watch out!
The Sycorax is a great alien monster. They are able to control much of the population of Earth through some kind of mind control, and if the leaders of Earth don't give them what they want, then they will force the one's in their control to jump of high-rise buildings. And still, the Doctor sleeps.
I love seeing Harriet Jones in this episode, and I love how she introduces herself to everyone as "Harriet Jones, Prime Minister," and everyone replies, "I know who you are." It's such a funny running gag.
It's a great moment when the TARDIS starts translating what the Sycorax is saying. The reactions from Rose, Harriet, Mickey and Alex are great. And then we finally see the person everyone (including ourselves) has been waiting to see, open the TARDIS doors. It's a great moment. Aside: I think this is one of the few times that you see anyone open both doors of the TARDIS. End of aside.
I love what makes the Doctor wake up. Nice cup of tea. Well, maybe not exactly a cup. But it's exactly what he needed.
The great thing about the regeneration of the Doctor, is that he is a totally new person - a new personality. I love how the Doctor is trying to figure out who he is - what kind of a man he is. And he starts to learn as he deals with the Sycorax.
I love it when the Doctor talks about human beings and starts to quote "The Circle of Life" from The Lion King. He makes it sound like such a grandiose speech, and it's just Elton John.
Poor Harriet Jones, Prime Minister. She learns the hard way that you don't go against the Doctor.
Quotes:
Doctor: Here we are, then. London, Earth, the solar system, isn't it?
Doctor: Merry Christmas!
Mickey: Who is he? where's the Doctor?
Rose: That's him. Right in front of you. That's the Doctor.
Jackie: What do you mean, that's the Doctor? Doctor who?
Rose: I keep forgetting his not human.
Mickey: You can rely on me. I don't go changing my face.
Mickey: I can't even go shopping with you, we get attacked by a brass band.
Jackie: I'm gonna get killed by a Christmas tree!
Doctor: My head! I'm having a neural implosion. I need...
Jackie: What do you need?
Doctor: I need...
Jackie: Just say. Tell me. Tell me. Painkillers? Aspirin?
Doctor: I need...
Jackie: Codeine? Paracetamol? Oh, I don't know. Pepto-Bismol?
Doctor: I need...
Jackie: Liquid paraffin. Vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin E!
Doctor: I need...
Jackie: Is it food? Something simple. Bowl of soup? Nice bowl of soup? Soup and a sandwich? Oh, soup and a little ham sandwich?
Doctor: I need you to shut up!
Jackie: Oh, he hasn't changed that much.
Doctor: Something is coming.
Harriet: Harriet Jones, Prime Minister.
Llewelyn: Well, yes, I know who you are.
Harriet: Alex is my right-hand man. I'm not used to having a right-hand man. I quite like it, though.
Alex: I quite like it myself.
Llewelyn: You seem to be talking about aliens as a matter of fact.
Harriet: There's an Act of Parliament banning my autobiography.
Harriet: I don't think we've been introduced. Harriet Jones, Prime Minister.
Miss Jacobs: Yes, I know who you are.
Major Blake: I'm getting demands from Washington, ma'am. The President's insisting that he takes control of the situation.
Harriet: You can tell the President, and please use these exact words, he's not my boss and he's certainly not turning this into a war.
Harriet: What about Torchwood. I know I'm not supposed to know about that, I realize that. Not even the United Nations knows. But if ever there was a need for Torchwood, it's now.
Major: I can't take responsibility.
Harriet: I can.
Alex (translating the Sycorax message): "Sycorax strong. Sycorax mighty. Sycorax rock." As in the modern sense, they rock.
Rose: The Doctor wouldn't do this. The old Doctor, the proper Doctor, he's wake up.
Harriet: Did we ask about the royal family? Oh. They're on the roof.
Harriet (telecasting an address to the world): Help us. Please, Doctor, help us.
Rose: I've traveled with him and I've seen all that stuff, but when I'm stuck at home, I'm useless.
Alex (translating the Sycorax message): "Come aboard."
Harriet: Well, how do I do that?
Llewelyn: What's happening?
Harriet: I would imagine it's called a teleport.
Llewelyn: It's a helmet. They might be like us. (the Sycorax removed his helmet) Or not.
Harriet: Harriet Jones. Prime Minister.
Alex (translating for the Sycorax): "Yes, we know who you are."
Mickey: No chance you can fly this thing.
Rose: Not anymore, no.
Mickey: Well, you did it before.
Rose: I know, but it's sort of been wiped out of my head, like it's forbidden. If I try again, I think the universe rips in half.
Mickey: Ah. Better not, then.
Rose: Maybe not.
Jackie: Right. Here we go. Nice cup of tea.
Rose: The solution to everything.
Mickey: Tea. Like we're having a picnic while the world comes to an end. It's very British.
Rose: Someone's got to be the Doctor.
Harriet: They'll kill you.
Rose: It never stopped him.
Rose: I, um... I address the Sycorax... um, according to Article 15 of the Shadow Proclamation. I command you to leave this world with all the authority of... the Slitheen Parliament of Rexicoricophalvitorius and, um...the Gelth Confederacy... as, uh, sanctioned by the Mighty Jagrafess and... Oh! The Daleks. Now leave this planet in peace! In peace...
Alex: Hold on. That's English.
Harriet: He's talking English.
Rose: You're talking English.
Sycorax: I would ever dirty my tongue with your primitive bile!
Rose: That's English. Can you hear English?
Mickey: Yea, that's English.
Alex: Definitely English.
Doctor: Did you miss me?
Doctor: You can have someone's eye out with that.
Doctor: You! Just wait. I'm busy. Mickey, hello! And Harriet Jones, MP for Flydale North. Blimey, it's like This is Your Life. Tea! That's all I needed. A good cup of tea. Super-heated infusion of free radical and tannin, just the thing for healing the synapses. Now, first things first. How do I look?
Rose: Um... Different.
Doctor: Good different or bad different?
Rose: Just different.
Doctor: Am I... ginger?
Rose: No, you're just sort of brown.
Doctor: Oh, I wanted to be ginger. I've never been ginger. And you, Rose Tyler, fat lot of good you were. You gave up on me. Oh, that's rude. Is that the sort of man I am now? Am I rude? Rude and not ginger.
Sycorax: If I might interrupt.
Doctor: Yes, sorry. Hello, big fella.
Syrorax: Who exactly are you?
Doctor: Well, that's the question.
Sycorax: I demand to know who you are!
Doctor (imitates the alien): I don't know! See, that's the thing. I'm the Doctor, but beyond that, I just don't know. I literally do not know who I am. It's all untested. Am I funny? Am I sarcastic? Sexy? A right old misery? Life and soul? Right-handed, left-handed, a gambler, a fighter, a coward, a traitor, a liar, a nervous wreck? I mean, judging by the evidence, I've certainly got a gob*.
Doctor: Blood control. Ah, blood control! I haven't seen blood control for years.
Doctor: Look at these people. These human beings. Consider their potential. From the day they arrive on the planet, and, blinking, step into the sun, there is more to see than can ever be seen, more to do than... No, hold on. Sorry, that's The Lion King. But the point still stands.
Sycorax: You stand as this world's champion.
Doctor: Thank you. I've no idea who I am, but you've just summed me up.
Rose: Look out!
Doctor: Oh, yea, that helps. I wouldn't have thought of that otherwise. Thanks.
Doctor: You but my hand off!
Sycorax (celebrating): Sycorax!
Doctor: And now I know what kind of man I am. I'm lucky, 'cause quite by chance, I'm still within the first 15 hours of my regeneration cycle. Which I've got just enough residual cellular energy to do this.
[His hand regenerated]
Sycorax: Witchcraft.
Doctor: Time Lord.
Rose: Doctor!
[She throws the Doctor a sword]
Doctor: So, I'm still the Doctor, then.
Rose: No arguments from me.
Doctor (to the Sycorax): You want to know the best bit? This new hand... it's a fighting hand!
Doctor: Not bad for a man in his jimjams. Very Arthur Dent. Now, there was a nice man.
Doctor: Doesn't that sum up Christmas. You go through all those presents and right at the end, tucked away at the bottom, there's always once stupid old satsuma.
Doctor: No second chances. I'm that sort of a man.
Doctor: When you talk of the Earth, then make sure you tell them this. It is defended.
Harriet: My Doctor.
Doctor: Prime Minister.
Harriet: Definitely the same man.
Jackie: Rose!
Rose: Mum!
Doctor: Oh, talking of trouble.
Rose: It was the tea. It fixed his head.
Doctor: That's all I needed. Cup of tea.
Jackie: I said so.
Doctor: Don't challenge me, Harriet Jones, because I'm a completely new man.
Jackie: It's like you're looking for trouble.
Doctor: Trouble's just the bits in between. It's all waiting out there, Jackie. And it's brand new to me. All those planets, creatures and horizons, haven't seen them yet. Not with these eyes. And it is going to be... fantastic.

Favorite Doctor Who Episodes: The Parting of the Ways
Of course I couldn't wait until next week to watch the season 1 finale. So, here is "The Parting of the Ways."
This story is epic. The Doctor is fighting his biggest foe, and he isn't sure he can win. The Doctor makes a decision to save Rose, and she is not happy with the way he goes about it. The scene when the Doctor leaves Rose in the TARDIS parallels a future episode (the season finale of season 2) when a projection of the Doctor talks to Rose to say good-bye. I love this scene. Especially how at the end of his speech, he turns and looks right at Rose. As I was watching this scene again, it just made me miss the Christopher Eccleston/Billie Piper pairing all over again. I think they were just so good together as the Doctor and his companion.
Okay, I'm starting to get sentimental already, and the episode isn't even over yet.
This was the first time I ever saw the Doctor regenerate. I remember watching the episode when it first aired in the United States. I didn't really understand what was happening, because I had never watched any of the earlier episodes. I hadn't seen any of his past regenerations. At first I was not happy. I didn't know what to think of David Tennant. But, then he grew on me, and I came to love David's Doctor as much as I loved Christopher's Doctor. Much the same way that I've come to love Matt Smith's Doctor and will be sad to see him go. I still wish that Christopher had stayed on for a least one more season. I would love to have seen his Doctor in some of the season 2 episodes. But... we still have season 1 to enjoy.
Quotes:
Jack: The extrapolator's working. We've got a fully functional force-field. Try saying that when you're drunk.
Doctor: And for my next trick...
Doctor: Told you I'd come and get you.
Rose: Never doubted it.
Doctor: I did. You all right?
Rose: Yea. And you?
Doctor: Not bad. Been better.
Rose: What are we gonna do?
Doctor: No good stood round here chinwagging. Human race, you'd gossip all day. The Daleks have got the answers. Let's go meet the neighbors.
Doctor: It's all right. Come on out. That force-field can hold back anything.
Jack: Almost anything.
Doctor: Yes. But I wasn't going to tell them that. Thanks.
Jack: Sorry.
Doctor: Do you know what they call me in in the ancient legends of the Dalek homeworld? The Oncoming Storm. You might have removed all your emotions, but I reckon right down deep in your DNA, there's one little spark left. And that's fear. Doesn't it just burn when you face me?
Dalek: Do not interrupt!
Doctor: I think you're forgetting something. I'm the Doctor, and if there's one thing I can do, it's talk.
Doctor: If anyone's going to shut up, it's you! Okey-doke, so where were we?
Doctor: Since when did the Daleks have a concept of blasphemy?
Jack: Rose, you are worth fighting for.
Jack: I wish I never met you, Doctor. I was much better off as a coward.
Rose: I was just thinking. I mean, obviously you can't, but you've got a time machine. Why can't you just go back to last week and warn them?
Doctor: Soon as the TARDIS lands, in that second, I become part of events. Stuck in the timeline.
Rose: Yea, I thought it'd be something like that.
Doctor: There's another thing the TARDIS could do. It could take us away. We could leave. Let history take its course. We go to Marbella in 1989.
Rose: Yea, but you'd never do that.
Doctor: No, but you could ask. Never even occurred to you, did it?
Rose: Well, I'm just too good.
Doctor: If I'm very clever, and I'm more than clever, I'm brilliant, I might just save the world. Or rip it apart.
Rose: I'd go for the first one.
Doctor: Me too!
Doctor (his projection): This is Emergency Programme One. Rose, now listen, this is important. If this message is activated, then it can only mean one thing. We must be in danger. And I mean fatal. I'm dead or about to die any second with no chance of escape.
Rose: No!
Doctor: And that's okay. Hope it's a good death. But I promised to look after you and that's what I'm doing. The TARDIS is taking you home.
Rose: I won't let you!
Doctor: I bet you're fussing and moanin' now. Typical. But hold on and just listen a bit more. The TARDIS can never return for me. Emergency Programme One means I'm facing an enemy that should never get their hands on this machine. So, this is what you should do. Let the TARDIS die. Just let this old box gather dust. No one can open it, no one will even notice it. Let it become a strange little thing standing on a street corner. And over the years the world will move one and the box will be buried. And if you want to remember me, then you can do one thing. That's all. One thing. Have a good life. Do that for me, Rose. Have a fantastic life.
Mickey: I knew it! I was all the way down Clifton Parade and I heard the engines. I thought, "There's only one thing that makes a noise like that."
Doctor: Do you see, Jack? That's the decision I've got to make for every living thing. Die as a human, or live as a Dalek. What would you do?
Jack: You sent her home. She's safe.
Emperor of the Daleks: But he will exterminate you!
Jack: Never doubted him. Never will.
Mickey: Have you tried that new pizza place in Minto Road?
Jackie: What's it selling?
Mickey: Pizza.
Rose: He's fighting for us. For the whole planet. And I'm just sitting here eating chips!
Rose: The Doctor showed me a better way of living your life... You don't just give up. You don't just let things happen. You make a stand. You say no. You have the guts to do what's right when everyone else just runs away! And I just can't...
Jack: This is it, ladies and gentlemen. We are at war.
Doctor: Jack, how we doin'?
Jack: 495 should be good. I like 495.
Emperor of the Daleks: What are you Doctor, coward or killer?
[pause]
Doctor: Coward. Any day.
Doctor: It's a bit dodgy, this process. You never know what you're gonna end up with.
Doctor: Time Lords have this little trick. It's sort of a way of cheating death. Except... it means I'm gonna change... and I'm not gonna see you again. Not like this. Not with this daft old face. And before I go...
Rose: Don't say that!
Doctor: Rose... before I go I just wanna tell you. You were fantastic. Absolutely fantastic. And do you know what? So was I.
Tenth Doctor: Hello. Okay. New teeth. That's weird. So, where was I? Oh, that's right. Barcelona.
Now, on to season 2!

Favorite Doctor Who Episodes: Bad Wolf
In "Bad Wolf," the Doctor and Rose return to Satellite Five (from "The Long Game") with Captain Jack Harkness (the wonderful John Barrowman) 100 years after Rose and the Doctor left it. But this time they don't go there willingly. Someone, or something, transports them there from the TARDIS, right into popular reality TV shows, where they have to fight for their lives, literally. The Doctor is in the Big Brother house, Rose is on "The Weakest Link," and Jack is on "What Not to Wear." I bet you didn't know that those reality TV shows would be popular in the year 200,100. Well, they're not exactly the same shows you're familiar with. They've... let's say, evolved. And not for the better. It's sad though, to think that in the world of Doctor Who, in 20,000 years the only television will be reality TV.
This episode is really good. The Doctor, Jack, and Rose are all trying to get out of their game and find each other. But not all of them are able to escape. The threat of dying in the games is very real, and then we find out there is a bigger threat. A threat to the Doctor from one of his biggest enemies.
I love Christopher's performance at the end of this episode. All of the things I love about his character just shine in those few minutes. Love him!
Quotes:
**Spoilers**
Voice: You are live on channel 44,000. Please do not swear.
Doctor: You have got to be kidding.
Rodrick: Just remember, do what the android says. Don't provoke it. The android's word is law.
Trine-E: Here we go again. We've got our work cut out for us.
Zu-Zana: I don't know, he's sort of handsome. He has a good lantern jaw.
Trine-E: Lantern jaws are so last year.
Zu-Zana: We are give you a brand new image.
Jack: Hold on. I was with the Doctor. Why? Is there something wrong with what I'm wearing?
Trine-E: We're going to have to find you some new colors. Maybe get rid of that "Oklahoma farm boy" thing you've got going on.
Zu-Zana: Just stand still and let the defabricator work its magic.
Jack: What's a defrabricator? [the defabricator works its magic] Okay. Defabricator. Does exactly what it says on the tin.
Doctor: This isn't just a game. There's something else going on. Well, here's the latest update from the Big Brother house. I'm gettin' out. I'm gonna find my friends. And then I'm gonna find you.
Jack: What about a bit of color to lift it?
Zu-Zana: Absolutely not. Never wear black with color. It makes the color look cheap and the black look boring.
Anne Droid: So, Rose, what do you actually do?
Rose: I just travel a bit. Bit of a tourist, I suppose.
Anne: Another way of saying "unemployed"?
Rose: No.
Anne: Have you got a job?
Rose: Well, not really, no. But --
Anne: Then you are unemployed, and yet you've still got enough money to buy peroxide.
Doctor: I was here before. Floor 139. The Satellite was broadcasting new channels back then. Had a bit of trouble upstairs. Nothing too serious. Easy. Gave them a hand. Home in time for tea.
Lynda: You were here a 100 years ago?
Doctor: Yes.
Lynda: Well, you're looking good on it.
Doctor: I moisturize.
Doctor: I'm just a traveler wandering past. Believe it or not, all I'm after is a quiet life.
Jack: Compatible systems. Just align the wave signature. Attaboy! Got myself a gun. Well, ladies, the pleasure was all mine, which is the only thing that matters in the end.
Doctor: She's got to be here somewhere.
Jack: You'd better hurry up. These games don't have a happy ending.
Doctor: You think I don't know that?!
Jack: Jack Harkness.
Lynda: Lynda Moss.
Jack: Nice to meet you, Lynda Moss.
Doctor: Do you mind flirting outside?
Jack: I was just saying hello.
Doctor: For you, that's flirting.
Davitch: Clear the floor! He's on his way up here. With a gun!
Davitch: Don't shoot!
Doctor: Oh, don't be so thick. Like I was ever gonna shoot. [throws man the gun]
Doctor: You! What were you saying?
Davitch: But, I've got your gun.
Doctor: Okay, so shoot me. Why can't she answer?
Davitch: She's... um. Can I put this down?
Doctor: If you want. Just hurry up.
Woman: You're not allowed in there. Archive 6 is out of bounds.
Jack (cocks two guns): Do I look like an "out of bounds" sort of guy?
Woman: If you're not holding us hostage, then let us out. The staff are terrified.
Doctor: That's the same staff who execute hundreds of contestants every day?
Woman: That's not our fault. We're just doing our jobs.
Doctor: And with that sentence you just lost the right to even talk to me. Now back off!
Jack: Captain Jack Harkness, by the way.
Davitch: I'm Davitch Pavale.
Jack: Nice to meet you Davitch Pavale.
Doctor: There's a time and a place.
Dalek: I will talk to the Doctor.
Doctor: Oh, will you? That's nice. Hello.
Dalek: But she will be destroyed.
Doctor: No. 'Cause this is what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna rescue her. I'm gonna save Rose Tyler from the middle of the Dalek Fleet. And then I'm gonna save the Earth. And then, just to finish off, I'm gonna wipe every last stinking Dalek out of the sky!
Dalek: But you have no weapons. No defences. No plan.
Doctor: Yea, and doesn't that scare you to death? Rose.
Rose: Yes, Doctor?
Doctor: I'm coming to get you.

Favorite Doctor Who Episodes: Father's Day
I know it’s been a while since I've done a post on a
favorite Doctor Who episode. Here’s the deal. "Father’s Day" is the next one on my list, but it’s been hard for me to watch it since my own father
passed away. I am a cry baby anyway, but when it comes to watching movies or TV
episodes or reading stories about a father passing away I am even worse. It’s
still very hard for me. So, although I love this episode, I have dreaded
watching it again. I know I could have skipped it and gone to my next favorite
episode, but I wanted to do them in the order they were released, so that’s my
excuse.
I finally got through
it (and yes, the tears did come), and I hope to get back to a regular schedule
of posting about my favorite Doctor Who episodes.
Although the Doctor can travel through time, he knows how
important it is not to change significant events. After traveling with the Doctor to the distant
future, and back in time to Victorian England and England during World War II,
Rose asks if they can travel to her own past so she can meet the father she
never knew (he was killed by a hit-and-run driver when she was a baby). Rose tells
the Doctor that all she wants is to be there when her father dies so he doesn't
have to die alone, but when they finally get there, she can’t bear to watch him
die, and saves him instead. However, by saving him, Rose creates a wound in time
and space, and she has to make a hard decision to save those who wouldn't have
perished if she had allowed her father to die as he was supposed to.
This episode shows the wonderful and unique relationship between the Doctor and Rose. It shows how their relationship has grown, and what they mean to each other. There's a sweet moment right before Pete is hit by the car when the Doctor grabs her hand. He cares for her so much. This is also the first time that we see the Doctor really angry. I
love seeing Christopher Eccleston as the happy Doctor, but Eccleston because is such a
great actor it’s quite impactful to see him angry. And he’s not angry at
an enemy, he’s angry at Rose.
The danger in this episode is very real and terrifying, and
it’s juxtaposed with the joy Rose has of getting to know her father, and then that is juxtaposed with the
horror of the choice she eventually has to make. The monsters are great. They are "behind the sofa" scary, and their threat is very menacing and devastating. It's also great how you don't see them to begin with, you just see what they see in a creepy red hue, and then you see what they do to people. Scary.
The supporting characters are great in this episode. I love
Jackie, Rose’s mom, as usual. She is such a great, quirky character, and it’s fun to
see a younger version of her (an 80’s version of her). She's still the same old Jackie. Shaun Dingwall, who
plays Pete Tyler, is wonderful. His performance is so understated, and so good. I loved the scenes between him and Rose. It's also poignant when she begins to see him as he truly is, and not the man her mother always described to her when she was growing up.
It's always so funny to see fashion from 80's. The big hair, the shoulder pads, the gaudy wedding dress. It will be interesting to watch this 20 years from now and think how hilarious Rose's outfit is. And then, maybe the 80's stuff will be back in fashion. (Okay, I hope not) *wink*

Quotes:
Rose (voiceover): Peter Alan Tyler. My dad. The most wonderful man in the world. Born 15th September, 1954.
Doctor: Your wish is my command. But be careful what you wish for.
Register: I, Peter Alan Tyler, take you, Jacqueline Andrea Suzette Prentice.
Pete: I, Peter Alan Tyler, take you, Jacqueline Suzanne... Suzette... Anita...
Jackie (to the Registrar): Oh, just carry on. It's good enough for Lady Di.
Rose: I thought he'd be taller.
Jackie: I only wish there'd been someone there for him.
Rose: I wanna be that someone, so he doesn't die alone.
Rose: It's so weird. The day my father died. I thought it would be all sort of grim and stormy. It's just an ordinary day.
Doctor: The past is another country. 1987's just the Isle of Wight.
Rose: Mum always said, "that stupid vase."
Doctor: That's the first you and me. It's a very bad idea, two sets of us being here at the same time.
Just be careful they don't see us.
Rose: I'm Rose.
Pete: That's a coincidence. That's my daughter's name.
Rose: That's a great name. Good choice. Well done.
Pete: If you want a cup of tea, kitchen's down there, milk's in the fridge. Well, it would be, wouldn't it? Where else would you put the milk?
Pete: I should write that down.
Doctor: When we met, I said, "Travel with me in space." You said, "No." Then I said, "Time machine."
Rose: It wasn't some big plan.
Doctor: I did it again. I picked some stupid ape. I should have known. It's not about showing you the universe. It never is. It's about the universe doing something for you.
Rose: So, it's okay when you go to other times and you save people's lives, but not when it's me saving my dad.
Doctor: I know what I'm doing, you don't.
Doctor: My entire planet died, my whole family. Do you think it never occurred to me to go back and save them?
Doctor: Rose, there's a man alive in the world who wasn't alive before. An ordinary man. That's the most important thing in creation. The whole world's different because he's alive.
Rose: Would you rather have him dead?
Doctor: I'm not saying that!
Rose: No, I get it. For once you're not the most important man in my life.
Pete: Boyfriend trouble?
Pete: Listen, don't worry about him. Couples have rows all the time.
Rose: We're not a couple. Why does everyone think we're a couple?
Rose: I think he left me.
Pete: What? A pretty girl like you? If I was going out with you --
Rose: Stop, right there!
Pete: I'm just saying...
Rose: I know what you're saying, and we're not going there. At no point are we going anywhere near "there." You aren't even aware that "there" exists. I don't even want to think about "there," and neither do you. "There," for you, is like... it's like the Bermuda Triangle.
Pete: Blimey, you know how to flatter a bloke.
Pete: I'll take you back to the loony bin where you belong. Except I'm sure I've met you somewhere before.
Groom's dad: Is it me, or did it just get cold?
Rose: I thought you were a proper business man.
Pete: I wish. I do a bit of this, bit of that. I scrape by.
Rose: Right. I must have heard wrong. So, really, you're a bit of a Del Boy.
Pete: Oh, shoot me down in flames. You're not related to my wife by any chance, are you?
Bridesmaid (re: the bride's dress): Now, that's what I call a meringue.
Jackie: Oh, here he is. The accident waiting to happen. You'd be late for your own funeral, and it nearly was.
Jackie (re: Rose): Who's this? (to Rose) And what are you looking at with your mouth open?
Rose: Your hair.
Jackie: What?
Rose: I've never seen it like -- I mean... It's lovely. Your hair's lovely.
Doctor: The older something is, the stronger it is.
Doctor: I've waited a long time to say this... Jackie Tyler, do as I say. Go and check the doors.
Jackie: Yes, sir.
Doctor: I should have done that ages ago.
Stuart: Excuse me. Mister...
Doctor: Doctor.
Stuart: You seem to know what's going on.
Doctor: I give that impression, yea.
Sarah: I don't know what this is all about, and I know we're not important...
Doctor: Who said you're not important? I've traveled to all sorts of places, done things you couldn't even imagine, but... you two - street corner, two o'clock in the morning, getting a taxi home. I've never had a life like that. Yes. I'll try and save you.
Rose: Where I come from, Jackie doesn't know how to work the timer on the video recorder.
Pete: I showed her that last week. Point taken.
Doctor (to baby Rose): Good girl. Yes, you are. You're not going to bring about the end of the world, are you? Are you?
[Adult Rose walks up to him]
Doctor: Jackie gave her to me to look after. How times change.
Rose: I'd better be careful. I think I just imprinted myself on Mickey like a mother chicken.
Rose: I can't do anything right, can I?
Doctor: Since you asked, no. So, don't touch the baby!
Rose: I'm not stupid.
Doctor: You could have fooled me. All right... I'm sorry. I wasn't really going to leave you on your own.
Rose: I know.
Doctor: But, between you and me, I haven't got a plan. No idea. No way out.
Pete: It's my fault all of this has happened.
Rose: This is my fault.
Pete: No, love. I'm your dad. It's my job for it to be my fault.
Pete: He's not in charge anymore. I am.
Rose (voiceover): Peter Alan Tyler. My dad. The most wonderful man in the world. Died 7th of November, 1987.

Favorite Doctor Who Episodes: The Long Game
The Doctor picked up another traveling companion (in addition to Rose) in "Dalek," and it's Adam's turn to be "godsmacked" by the world the Doctor takes him to - well, the space station. This space station, Satellite Five, broadcasts the news to the entire universe. Quite the job.
I love how the Doctor lets Rose introduce everything to Adam when the Tardis lands on the space station. And I love Adam's response to seeing the Earth in the year 200,000.
The Doctor gets so excited when he senses that something is wrong. Rose says to him, "Trouble?" and he responds with a smile, "Oh, yea." The Doctor isn't content when everything is smooth sailing. It's not in his nature.
You know how badly you want that promotion? Well, if they tell you that your promotion will take you to floor 500, then you need to get a bit suspicious. Even if they tell you the walls are made of gold. Just sayin'.
It's interesting to have Adam traveling with the Doctor and Rose, to show how different Adam is from them. The Doctor travels to learn about other species. To help where he's needed. And Rose has learned that from traveling with the Doctor. Adam is all about Adam. He wants knowledge, but not for knowledge sake. He wants it for Adam's sake. (Ahh, too bad his name isn't Pete, that would have been funny sentence *wink*).
The end of this episode is one of my favorite moments. Watch it!
Quotes:
Doctor: He's your boyfriend.
Rose: Not anymore.
Doctor: Come on, Adam, open your mind. You're gonna like this fantastic era of history. The human race at its most intelligent. Culture, art, politics. This era's got fine food, good manners --
Rose: Fine cuisine.
Doctor: My watch must be wrong. No, it's fine. It's weird.
Rose: That's what comes from showing off. Your history's not as good as you thought it was.
Doctor: My history's perfect.
Rose: Well, obviously not.
Doctor: Here you go. Pocket money. Don't spend it all on sweets.
Adam: How does it work?
Doctor: Go and find out. Stop nagging me! The thing is, Adam, time travel's like visiting Paris. You can't just read the guide book, you gotta throw yourself in. Eat the food, use the wrong verbs, get charged double and end up kissing complete strangers. Or is that just me?
Doctor: Off you go! Your first date.
Rose: You're gonna get a smack, you are.
Cathica: The Face of Boe has just announced he's pregnant.
Editor: Something is wrong. Something fictional.
Doctor: Oi! Mutt and Jeff. Over here.
Suki: You're my lucky charm.
Doctor: All right. I'll hug anyone.
Adam: You'd rather be with him. It's gonna take a better man than me to get between you two.
Rose: Here you go, take the Tardis key, you know just in case it gets a bit much.
Adam: Yea, like it's not weird in there.
Suki: Say goodbye to Steve for me!
Cathica: You're not management, are you?
Doctor: At last! She's clever.
Doctor: Humanity's been set back about 90 years. When did Satellite Five start broadcasting?
Cathica: Ninety-one years ago.
Editor: Check him. Double-check him. Triple-check him. Quadruple.
Doctor: Rose is asking the right kind of question.
Rose: I thank you.
Doctor: Why is it so hot?
Cathica: One minute you're worried about the Empire and the next minute it's the central heating.
Doctor: Never underestimate plumbing. Plumbing's very important.
Editor: We all know what happens to non-entities. They get promoted.
Rose: Well, I don't know about you, but I feel like I'm missing out on a party. It's all going on upstairs. Fancy a trip?
Adam: How do I activate it?
Nurse: It's a personal choice. Some people whistle. I know one man who triggers it with "Oh, Danny Boy." But you're is on default for now. That's a click of the fingers.
Editor: Oh, you're full of information. But it's only fair we get some information back because, apparently, you're no one. It's so rare not to know something.
Editor: The Mighty Jagrefess of the Holy Hadrojassic Maxarodenfoe. I call him Max.
Editor: Is a slave a slave if he doesn't know he's enslaved?
Doctor: Yes.
Editor: Oh! I was hoping for a philosophical debate. Is that all I'm going to get. "Yes"?
Doctor: Yes.
Editor: You're no fun.
Doctor: Let me out of these manacles. You'll find out how much fun I am.
Doctor: You and your boyfriends!
Rose: What do I do?
Doctor: Flick the switch!
Doctor: See you in the headlines.
Adam: My head opens.
Doctor: What, like this?
Adam: Don't!
Doctor: Don't do what?
Adam: Stop it!

Favorite Doctor Who Episodes: Dalek
The Doctor has had to fight many villains in his 11 regenerations. However, the Daleks are his worst enemy. And they always seem to come back. There are many episodes in the classic Doctor Who oeuvre (yes, I love that word) featuring the scary aliens. "Dalek" was the first episode in the reboot that featured the Daleks. For a villain, they don't look very menacing, but to those familiar with Doctor Who lore, there is nothing worse than a Dalek. I'm sure the fans who watched the classic Doctor Who were terrified when they saw that the Daleks were back.
Observations:
A signal draws the TARDIS off-course, and the Doctor and Rose land in an underground bunker in Utah in 2012. Being from Utah, it was cool to me that the first episode (of the reboot) set in America is set in my home state. Of course, the 11th Doctor will have a stronger tie to Utah, and those episodes really were filmed in Utah, unlike this episode, which was probably filmed in Wales.
The idea of a human collecting extraterrestrial artifacts is really cool. It gives us a chance to see a stuffed Slitheen arm, the milometer from the Roswell spaceship, and the head of a classic Cyberman (they are redesigned when they appear in a future episode), another one of the Doctor's adversaries.
I had never seen a Dalek before I saw this episode. I didn't know what it was, so I had no idea of the Doctor's history with them. However, when I saw the Doctor's reaction to it when he heard its "voice," I knew that he was terrified by it. Christopher Eccleston's performance was spot-on. His performance is especially great because he's acting against a "metaltron," as Van Statten's people call it. These are the kinds of scenes that really made me love Eccleston as the Doctor. He has so many emotions in this one scene.
The Dalek downloads the entire internet. It now knows everything. And half of the information it knows now is wrong. *wink*
When the soldiers get in position to fire on the Dalek in the hallway, it reminds me of the rebel soldiers at the beginning of Star Wars (A New Hope), getting in position to prepare for the arrival of Darth Vadar on the spaceship. It's pretty funny.
Quotes:
Rose: What is it?
Doctor: An old friend of mine. Well, an enemy. The stuff of nightmares, reduced to an exhibit. I'm getting old.
Rose: If someone's collecting aliens, that makes you Exhibit A.
Van Statten: Wipe his memory. Put him on the side of the road someplace. Memphis or Minneapolis. Somewhere beginning with an M.
Van Statten: So, the next President, what do you think, Republican or Democrat?
Diana: Democrat, sir.
Van Statten: For what reason?
Diana: They're just so funny, sir?
Diana: We don't know how they got in.
Van Statten: I'll tell you how they got in. Intruder window. (pause) Intruder window? That was funny.
[Courtesy laughter]
Doctor: I really wouldn't hold it like that.
Diana: Shut it.
Doctor: Really, though. That's wrong.
Van Statten: Is it dangerous?
Doctor: No, it just looks silly.
Van Statten: We're hidden away with the most valuable collection of extraterrestrial artifacts in the world, and you just stumbled in by mistake?
Doctor: Pretty much sums me up, yea.
Van Statten (to the Doctor): Quite a collector yourself. She's rather pretty.
Rose: She's gonna smack you if you keep calling her "she."
Va Statten: And you claim greater knowledge?
Doctor: I don't need to make claims. I know how good I am.
Rose: Blimey, you can smell the testosterone.
Van Statten: You, English. You look after the girl. Go and canoodle or spoon, or whatever it is you British do.
Van Statten: You, Doctor with no name, come and see my pet.
Van Statten: Doesn't know what he has. Doesn't know what it can do.
Doctor: If you can't kill, then what you good for, Dalek? What's the point of you?
Dalek: I am alone in the universe.
Adam: The thing is, it's all true. Everything the United Nations tries to keep quiet. Spacecraft, aliens, visitors to earth. They really exist.
Rose: That's amazing.
Adam: I know it sounds incredible, but I honestly believe the whole universe is just teeeming with life.
Rose: I'm gobsmacked, yea.
Rose: So, how did you end up here?
Adam: Van Statten has agents all over the world looking for geniuses to recruit.
Rose: Oh, right. You're a genius.
Adam: Sorry, but, yea. I can't help it. I was born clever.
Doctor: The Dalek race was genetically engineered. Every single emotion was removed, except hate.
Van Statten: Genetically engineered? By whom?
Doctor: By a genius, Van Statten. By a man who was king of his own little world. You'd like him.
Van Statten? Broadband? Roswell.
Doctor: What is the nearest town?
Van Statten: Salt Lake City.
Doctor: Population?
Van Statten: One million.
Doctor: All dead. If the Dalek gets out, it will murder every living creature. That's all it needs.
Van Statten: But why would it do that?
Doctor: Because it honestly believes they should die.
Doctor: Aim for the dome, the head, the eyepiece. That's the weakest spot.
Soldier: Thank you, Doctor, but I think I know how to fight one single tin robot.
Diana: That would take a genius.
Van Statten: Good thing you've got me then.
Doctor: You want to help?
Doctor: If you want orders, follow this one - kill yourself.
Dalek: The Daleks must survive.
Doctor: The Daleks have failed. Why don't you finish the job and make the Daleks extinct? Rid the universe of your filth. Why don't you just die?
Dalek: You would make a good Dalek..
Doctor: Broken. Broken. Hairdryer.
Doctor: You in a fight? I'd like to see that.
Adam: I could do.
Doctor: What are you going to do, throw your A-levels at them?
Rose: Adam was saying that all his life he's wanted to see the stars.
Doctor: Tell him to go and stand outside then.
Doctor: Rose, he's a bit pretty.
Rose: I hadn't noticed.
Doctor: On your own head.
Adam: Doctor, what are you doing standing inside a box?

Favorite Doctor Who Episodes: The End of the World
One of the things I remember most from the first time I saw "The End of the World" was the big grin on the face of the Doctor when all of the alien species arrive on the spaceship to witness a historic event. He watches Rose's amazement as she sees each one, and smiles the whole time. You know that the Doctor has met many, many aliens in his many years of traveling through multiple universes, yet he still has so much joy and excitement in meeting new species. And he's so excited for Rose to see things she's never seen before.
Rose has just decided to leave her boring life behind and travel with the Doctor. He asks her if she wants to go backward or forward in time, and she says forward. Does he take her 100 years into the future? Ten thousand years into the future? No. He takes her 5 billion years (i.e., the year 5.5/Apple/26) into the future to witness the day the sun expands, the burns the Earth. If you can go anywhere in time, you might as well go to the ends of the Earth.
I love that when the Tardis arrives at their destination the Doctor rings a service bell. It's as if he's telling Rose, "Order up!"
We meet the Face of Boe for the first time in this episode. The Doctor will meet the Face of Boe a few more times in his future travels, and he will prove to be very significant.
We also meet Cassandra, the very last human. She has had so much "plastic surgery" that all she she is now is just a thin layer of stretched-out skin with only two eyes and a mouth. She's quite the sight for Rose. Cassandra brings an old-fashioned jukebox as a gift, and tells the guests that, according to the archives, it was called an iPod. When they play "Tainted Love" on the jukebox, and the Doctor starts to jam with the music, it's such a great moment.
Rose, however, isn't feeling the love. It's an emotional time for her. She's far away from home (in miles and billions of years), the only alien she's ever met is the Doctor, and now suddenly she's surrounded by a bunch of them (even Cassandra isn't technically human now). And to top it off, her home planet is going to burn in 30 minutes and everyone is partying.
I love it when the little blue alien valets are parking the Tardis in a "proper" place, and one of the valets hands the Doctor his valet ticket and the ticket says, "Have a Nice Day."
In the middle of a growing threat that no one on the spaceship is aware of, there is a wonderful exchange between Rose and the Doctor. Rose is so overwhelmed by everything she has seen, especially watching the sun as it slowly burns the Earth, and hearing the countdown of "Earth death" over the intercom. The Doctor comes in and thinks that Rose must be having a great experience, simply because he brought her there. Rose talks about how everyone is just so "alien." The Doctor knows that she's talking about him as well. And a friendly conversation turns very tense. When the Doctor tells Rose that everyone speaks English because the Tardis has a "telepathic field that get into your brain and translates," Rose becomes very upset that he didn't tell her that the Tardis is able to get inside her brain and change her mind. Then the Doctor gets upset when Rose tries to get the Doctor to tell her where he's from. She has realized that she's "hitched a ride with a man" that she doesn't even know, and she's scared. And then, the Doctor jimmy's her mobile phone so she is able to call her mom. Rose talks to her mother when she's 5 billion years in the future. It's a great scene, and very well acted by Christopher and Billie.
Quotes:
Rose : You think you're so impressive.
Doctor: I am so impressive.
Rose: You wish.
Doctor: Right, then. You asked for it. I know exactly where to go.
Doctor: You lot. You spend all of your time thinking about dying, like you're going to get killed by eggs or beef or global warming or asteroids. But you never take the time to imagine the impossible - that you'll survive.
Rose: So, when it says "guests," does that mean people?
Doctor: Depends what you mean by 'people."
Rose: I mean people. What do you mean?
Doctor: Aliens.
Doctor: The great and good are gathering to watch the planet burn.
Rose: What for?
Doctor: Fun. Mind you, when I say "the great and the good," what I mean is the rich.
Rose: The planet looks the same as ever. I thought the continents shifted and things.
Doctor: They did, and the Trust shifted them back. That's a classic Earth.
Blue Alien: Who the hell are you?
Doctor: Oh, that's nice. Thanks.
Doctor: I'm a guest. Look, I've got an invitation. Look. (shows his "psychic" paper) You see. It's fine. You see. "The Doctor plus one." I'm the Doctor and this is Rose Tyler. She's my plus one. All right?
Doctor: The paper's slightly psychic. It shows them whatever I want them to see. Saves a lot of time.
Rose: He's blue.
Doctor: Yea.
Rose. Okay.
Blue Alien: Representing the Forest of Cheam, we have trees, namely Jabe, Lute and Coffa.
Cassandra: Behold, I bring gifts. From Earth itself, the last remaining ostrich egg. Legend says it had a wingspan of 50 feet, and blew fire from its nostrils. Or was that my third husband? No, don't laugh. I'll get laughter lines.
Rose: So, you're a plumber?
Raffalo: That's right, miss.
Rose: You still have plumbers?
Raffalo: I hope so, else I'm out of a job.
Raffalo: Where are you from miss? If you don't mind me asking.
Rose: No, not at all. Um... I don't know. A long way away. I just sort of hitched a lift with this man. I didn't even think about it. I don't even know who he is. He's a complete stranger.
Blue Alien (over the intercom): Would the owner of the blue box in Gallery 15 please report to the Steward's office immediately. Guests are reminded that the use of teleportation devices is strictly prohibited under peace treaty 5.4/Cup/16. Thank you.
Rose (picks up the baby tree in a pot): Hello. My name's Rose. That's a sort of a plant. We might be related. I'm talking to a twig.
Doctor (to the little aliens parking the Tardis): Oi, now. Careful with that. Park it properly. No scratches.
Doctor: What do you think, then?
Rose: Great. Yeah. Fine. Once you get past the slightly psychic paper. (pause) They're just so alien. The aliens are so alien. You look at 'em, and they're alien.
Doctor: Good thing I didn't take you to the Deep South.
Rose: All right. As my mate Shereen says, "Don't argue with the designated driver." Can't exactly call for a taxi. (gets out her mobile phone) There's no signal. We're out of range. Just a bit.
Doctor: Tell you what, with a little bit of jiggery-pokery...
Rose: Is that technical term? Jiggery-pokery?
Doctor: Yea. I came first in jiggery-pokery. What about you?
Rose: No. I failed in hullabaloo.
Rose (on the mobile talk to her mom): What day is it?
Jackie: Wednesday. All day.
Rose: I was just calling 'cause I might be late home.
Jackie: Is there something wrong?
Rose: No. I'm fine. Top of the world. (hangs up)
Doctor: Think that's amazing, you want to see the bill?
Rose: That was 5 billion years ago. She's dead now. Five billion years later, my mum's dead.
Doctor: Bundle of laughs you are.
Jabe: And your wife?
Doctor: Oh, she's not my wife.
Jabe: Partner?
Doctor: No.
Jabe: Concubine?
Doctor: No.
Jabe: Prostitute?
Rose: Whatever I am, it must be invisible. Do you mind? Tell you what, you two go and pollinate, and I'll catch up with the family. Quick word with Michael Jackson. (points to Cassandra)
Doctor: Don't start a fight. (to Jabe) I'm all yours.
Rose: And I want you home by midnight.
Doctor: I was on board another ship once. They said was unsinkable. I ended up clinging to an iceberg.
Doctor: So, what you're saying is, if we get in trouble, there's no one to help us out?
Jabe: I'm afraid not.
Doctor: Fantastic.
Jabe: I don't understand. In what way is that fantastic?
Doctor: So, tell me Jabe, what's a tree like you doing in a place like this?
Jabe: And what about your ancestry? Perhaps you could tell a story or two. Perhaps a man only enjoys trouble when there's nothing else left.
Jabe: I know where you're from. Forgive me for intruding, but it's remarkable that you even exist. I just want to say... how sorry I am.
Doctor: That's a great bit of air conditioning. Nice and old-fashioned. I bet they call it retro.
Cassandra: The planet's end. Come gather! Come gather! Bid farewell to the cradle of civilization. Let us mourn her with a traditional ballad.
(They play "Toxic" by Britney Spears on the jukebox)
Doctor: Anyone in there?
Rose: Let me out!
Doctor: Oh, well, it would be you.
Rose: Open the door!
Doctor: Hold on. Give us two ticks.
Doctor: The whole things jammed. I can't open the door. Stay there. Don't move.
Rose: Where am I going to go? Ipswich?
Cassandra: This whole event was sponsored by the Face of Boe. He invited us. Talk to the Face! Talk to the Face!
Doctor: Five billion years, and it still comes down to money.
Doctor: You lot, just chill.
Jabe: Stop wasting time, Time Lord.
Doctor: You've seen how dangerous it is. Do you want to go home?
Rose: I don't know. I want... Can you smell chips?
Doctor: Yea.
Rose: I want chips.
Doctor: Me too.
Rose: Before you get me back in that box, chips it is. And you can pay.
Doctor: No money.
Rose: What sort of date are you? Come on, then, tight wad. Chip are on me. We've only got five billion years 'til the shops close.

Favorite Doctor Who Episodes: Rose
In honor of the 50th Anniversary of Doctor Who, I will be blogging about my favorite Doctor Who episodes (I have not seen many of the classic Doctor Who episodes, so my list will only include episodes since its return in 2005). There are, of course, episodes I love more than others, but I had a hard time putting them in any order of preference. So, I've decided blog about my favorite episodes in order of their airing, starting with the premiere of the ninth Doctor, Christopher Eccleston.
Side note: If I end up blogging about more than 50, I'm sorry. Unless you love Doctor Who as much as I do, then I won't apologize to you, I'll just say, "Enjoy!"
"Rose" is one of my favorite episode mainly because this is the first Doctor Who episode I saw (except for some bits and pieces of the old Doctor Who on PBS when I was growing up). This is where I, along with Rose, met the ninth Doctor for the first time. Christopher Eccleston was my first Doctor, and because of that, I have to say that he's my favorite Doctor. I think David Tennant and Matt Smith are wonderful too; I have nothing bad to say about either of them as the Doctor. However, Christopher Eccleston will always be my Doctor. I love the moment when we first meet him, how he grabs Rose's hand right as she is about to be attacked by a dangerous, animated mannequin (or Auton), and tells her to "Run!" It's a great introduction to the Gallifreyen Time Lord.
However, before we meet the Doctor, we first meet Rose Tyler. She's a London girl with a mundane job at a department store, who lives with her mother in a small flat. She doesn't seem extraordinary in any way, but her life is about to change, drastically. I would say that Rose and Donna Noble are tied as my favorite companion. They are so different, yet there are so many things about each of them that I love. They are both very tenacious. They bring the Doctor "back to Earth" when he gets a bit too big for his britches. They aren't afraid to face danger to help the Doctor save people in danger, and even save the Doctor himself a few times.
I love how the danger in this episode is from an object that most of us have seen many, many times. And just like Rose, we don't expect to see one move. The writers take a common object, vilify it, and make you just a little freaked out the next time you see one for real. The moment the first mannequin moves his head is so creepy. And then it starts moving toward Rose. It's creepy in a very absurd kind of way. Just like Doctor Who should be. And then more and more mannequins begin to move toward her, until she is cornered. Then suddenly our hero is there, grabbing her hand and saying, "Run!"
It's great to see Rose walking around the streets of London, dazed after meeting the Doctor, with a plastic arm in her hand, wondering what to do next. And then, after a huge explosion on the roof of the department store, Rose runs past a blue Police Box. Our first glimpse of the new Tardis.
I love the comedy in the show. It doesn't take itself too seriously. There's a great scene when Rose is making tea in the kitchen, talking away, and behind her the Doctor is being choked by a disembodied, plastic arm. And Rose is totally oblivious. He tries to get her attention when she walks into the room, but she still yaks on and on. Great comedic moment.
One of the things I love about Christopher Eccleston's version of the Doctor, especially in this first episode, is that he has so much joy. It feels like he just enjoys life, even though danger follows him (or he follow danger). He finds joy discovering new things. He finds joy in saving people. He finds joy in traveling. You know that there is some sorrow deep down in him, but when he smiles, you just want to smile with him.
The first time the Doctor describes who he is to Rose, it is so eloquent and poetic. I love it. See the quote below (*) This is the way I like to think about the Doctor. Yes, he's an alien. Yes, he's a Time Lord. Yes, he can travel in time and space. Yes, he's from the North (*wink). Yes, he's the last of his kind. However, that first answer he gives to Rose when she asks who he is fits the Doctor to a 'T."
Mickey drives a yellow Bug. Cool people drive Bugs. Well, cool people and Mickey. *wink*
When the Doctor is in Rose's flat, and he looks in the mirror, the remark he makes makes it seem like he just recently regenerated, but he's already been a few places (and times) since the regeneration. Kennedy's assassination, the Titanic, the coast of Sumatra.
Okay, I've seen the inside of the Tardis many times, in its many regenerations, so I know that it's bigger on the inside than it looks on the outside, but I still love to see the wonder and absolute disbelief on Rose's face when she realizes that there is something strangely wonderful about this blue wooden box.
I love that the Doctor wants peace for the universe. He doesn't want to just kill the bad guy, and he does all he can to reason and negotiate with the alien trying to take over Earth. However, when that doesn't work, and the danger to the inhabitants of Earth (well, mainly London) becomes imminent, the Doctor's got to do what the Doctor's got to do, and so does his companion. Rose is the perfect companion. She doesn't break down in the face of danger. She acts.
The villainous alien is a bit ridiculous, and the special effects are not the highest quality, but it's not so much about what the villains look like, or the greatness of the special effects, or even the danger they're in. It's about the relationship between the Doctor and those around him, particularly his companion. It's about the wonder the companion feels in discovering new worlds, and going back in time to see historic places and people. That's what I love so much about the show - the characters. They make you care, and when you care about the characters, you are willing to go on a journey that can be scary, funny, ridiculous, dangerous, fun, and uniquely "Doctor Who."
Quotes:
Doctor: Run!
Rose: You pulled his arm off!
Doctor: Yep. Plastic.
Rose: Who are they then, students? Is this a student thing, or what?
Doctor: Why would they be students?
Rose: I don't know.
Doctor: Well, you said it. Why students?
Rose: 'Cause, to get that many people dressed up and being silly, they've gotta be students.
Doctor: That makes sense. Well done.
Rose: Thanks.
Doctor: They're not students.
Doctor: I'm going to go upstairs and blow it up, and I might die in the process, but don't worry about me. No. You go on. Go and have your lovely beans on toast.
Doctor: I'm the Doctor, by the way. What's your name?
Rose: Rose.
Doctor: Nice to meet you, Rose. Run for your life!
Jackie (Rose's mother, on the phone): I know. It's on the telly. It's everywhere. She's lucky to be alive! Honestly, it's aged her. Skin like an old Bible. Walking in now you'd think I was her daughter.
Doctor: What are you doing here?
Rose: I live here.
Doctor: What do you do that for?
Rose: Because I do.
Doctor: I must have the wrong signal. You're not plastic are you? (knocks her head) No. Bonehead. Bye then.
Jackie: I'm in my dressing gown.
Doctor: Yes, you are.
Jackie: There's a strange man in my bedroom.
Doctor: Yes, there is.
Jackie: Well, anything could happen.
Doctor: (pause) No.
Doctor (looks in the mirror): Ah. Could have been worse. Look at the ears.
Doctor (throws the arm at Rose): 'Armless.
Rose: Do you think?
Rose: Hold on a minute. You can't just go swannin' off.
Doctor: Yes, I can. Here I am. This is me swannin' off. See ya!
Rose: Who are you?
Doctor: Told ya. The Doctor.
Rose: Yea, but, Doctor what?
Doctor: Just the Doctor.
Rose: The Doctor?
Doctor: Hello!
Rose: Is that supposed to be impressive?
Doctor: Sort of, yeah.
Rose: So, what you're saying is the entire world revolves around you.
Doctor: Sort of, yeah.
Rose: You're full of it!
Doctor: Sort of, yeah.
Rose: Really, though, Doctor. Tell me. Who are you?
*Doctor: Do you know like we were saying, about the earth revolving? It's like when you're a kid, the first time they tell you that the world's turning and you just can't quite believe it 'cause everything looks like it's standing still. I can feel it... [takes Rose's hand] ...the turn of the earth. The ground beneath our feet is spinning at a thousand miles an hour. And the entire planet is hurtling around the sun at 67,000 miles an hour. And I can feel it. We're falling through space, you and me, clinging to the skin of this tiny little world. And, if we let go... [let's go of Rose's hand] That's who I am. Now forget me, Rose Tyler. Go home.
Rose: Hello. I've come to see Clive. We've been emailing.
Boy: Dad! One of your nutters!
Clive: The Doctor is a legend woven through history. When disaster comes, he's there. He brings a storm in his wake, and has one constant companion.
Rose: Who's that?
Clive: Death.
Rose: Open the gate! Use that tube thing. Come on!
Doctor: Sonic screwdriver.
Rose: Use it!
Rose: You can't hide inside a wooden box.
Doctor: The assembled hordes of Genghis Khan couldn't get through that door. Believe me, they've tried.
Doctor: Where do you want to start?
Rose: Um. The inside is bigger than the outside?
Doctor: Yes.
Rose: It's alien?
Doctor: Yep.
Rose: Are you alien?
Doctor: Yes. Is that all right?
Rose: Yea.
Rose: If you are an alien, how come you sound like you're from the north?
Doctor: Lots of planets have a north.
Doctor: Fantastic!
Doctor: I'm not here to kill it. I've got to give it a chance.
Doctor: Can we keep the domestics outside? Thank you.
Doctor: I am talking! This planet is just starting. These stupid people have only just learned how to walk, but they're capable of so much more.
Doctor: That's not true. I should know. I was there. I fought in the war. It wasn't my fault. I couldn't save your world. I couldn't save any of them.
Mickey: There's nothing you can do.
Rose: I've got no A levels. No job. No future. But I'll tell you what I have got. Jericho Street Junior School under-sevens gymnastic team. I've got the bronze.
Doctor: Now we're in trouble.
Jackie (answers her mobile phone): Rose! Rose! Don't go out of the house. It's not safe.
Rose: You'd be dead if it wasn't for me.
Doctor: Yes, I would. Thank you.
Doctor: This box goes anywhere in the universe. Free of charge.
Mickey: Don't! He's an alien. He's a thing.
Doctor: He's not invited.
Doctor: What do you think? You could stay here. Fill your life with work and food and sleep. Or you could go, uh... anywhere.
Rose: Is it always this dangerous?
Doctor: Yea.
Doctor: By the way, did I mention that it also travels in time?
Rose (to Mickey): Thanks.
Mickey: Thanks for what?
Rose: Exactly.
Side note: If I end up blogging about more than 50, I'm sorry. Unless you love Doctor Who as much as I do, then I won't apologize to you, I'll just say, "Enjoy!"
