Once Upon a Time: The Doctor

The rumors were true. Dr. Whale's true identity was another famous Doctor. This episode reveals much, but brings up many more questions. I wish this show were less like Lost in that way. I wish it would answer questions, not just create more. But then, some of the question I have may only be plot holes that the writers didn't think about. So, we may never know the answers.

Observations/Questions:

I'm still waiting for Mulan and Sleeping Beauty to have more to do than just hang around with Snow and Emma as they try to find their way home. Maybe they're supposed to be like the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Lion in The Wizard of Oz. But those three did things. They weren't just some tagalongs.

The Women meet Hook. And Hook meets The Women.

Regina is having magic withdrawals, and goes to see Jiminy/Archie for therapy. It's so funny how they make it sound like she's getting off drugs. Well, I guess magic was her drug of choice.

Regina says she brought who she wanted to Storybrooke. So, did she have a list (and check it twice) of all of the people she wanted to come to our world, and who she didn't want? That's a lot of planning to do in nine months. She had to give everyone new names and back stories. But then, maybe that's why a lot of them had different names, because she didn't know their names to begin with.
Regina: Let's see, what should we name everyone, and who should they be in this new world?

  • Snow - Mary Margaret Blanchard (she's a teacher who is sad and alone - that will show her)
  • Charming - David (he's in a coma - and if by chance he comes out of it, he's married to Katherine, who was Abigail, whom he should have married, not Snow)
  • Rumpelstiltskin - Mr. Gold (we'll remind him what he used to be able to do with magic, but can't anymore)
  • Red - Ruby (that's a great name because rubies are red, I'm so clever - she's a slut who runs the diner with her Granny - I'll be nice and keep them together)
  • Etc., etc., etc.
  • Third villager from the right: Bob (he's a mechanic, and... well, who cares)
  • Second wench from the back: Cindy (ditto)
  • *wink*
By the time Regina knew enough magic to do an enchantment spell to preserve Daniel's body, his body would have already started decomposing. But I guess she could do magic to reverse the decomposition?

It seems logical to me that if Regina preserved Daniel's body with magic, that she would have done the same with her father. I wonder why she didn't. Because only Daniel was part of the Dr. Frankenstein plot. *wink*

Rumpelstiltskin wanted Dorothy's Ruby slippers to get to our land. So, now that we have our first reference to Oz, who will will meet from there? The Wizard? Scarecrow? Tin Man? Lion? Ozma? No, not Ozma, because Once Upon a Time only bases the characters on movie versions of the stories, not the original books. *wink*

Emma always says that she can tell when someone is lying, and usually she's wrong. But, by Jove, this time she's actually right!

Dr. Whale actually looks more like someone from Oz, with his costume and his hair parted in the middle, than like someone from the mid 1800s England. Unless they're going to change the story and have him come from somewhere else.

Dr. Whale/Frankenstein says that people knew about Fairy Tale Land in his world. They knew enough to know there was magic and someone knew how to get him there. I'd like to know how.

Daniel tore Dr. Whale's arm off. Yep, he's a monster.

Horses don't like monsters who have been brought back from the dead.

Sleeping Beauty is quite taken by Killian/Hook. I think she has a crush. Prince Who?

Everyone in Fairy Tale Land and the Enchanted Forest are always on a quest to find something. I wonder who's looking for the cow as white as milk, the cape as red as blood, the hair as yellow as corn, the slipper as pure as gold? Look it up. *wink*

The moment when Dr. Frankenstein tries to bring Daniel back from the dead in Fairy Tale Land was a bit anticlimactic. We already know it's not going to work because he's still dead and under the enchantment spell in Storybrooke.

Did anyone get what Daniel says to Regina in the stables after she says, "But I love you"? He says, "Then love ______." What did he say there? I know it was significant, because she "kills" him after that.
Dr. Frankenstein's inability to bring back Daniel in Fairy Tale Land (or his "lack of trying," though Regina doesn't know that) causes Regina's final push into turning totally evil, and Daniel's death in Storybrooke may be the final push for her to turn good.

Now, I understand why Rumpel wanted Regina to turn evil - so she would curse Fairy Tale Land and send everyone to our world. But why did Rumpel want Regina to do it? Why didn't he just do it himself?

So, the first time Victor tried to bring back his brother it ended badly. When are we going to see that? Did he tear off Igor's arm? And Victor/Dr. Whale still wants to get back to his land, so is his brother dead again, and he wants to try bringing him back again?

I'm still confused about why they made Dr. Whale a womanizer. Where is that character trait in Dr. Frankenstein. Remember when they all started remembering who they were - the question Dr. Whale asked David/Charming was if the nuns were still nuns. It's a funny line, but why would that be his first question?

We still don't know how Victor got to Storybrooke. The last we see of him, he's in his own world (our world in 1800s?) bringing his brother back from the dead.

Remember how I mentioned earlier that most of the characters are based on the movie versions, not the book. Well, of course Dr. Frankenstein says "It's alive" when his brother's hand moves. That line is not in the book. It's in the classic black and white movie, as well as in Young Frankenstein.

Quotes:

Regina: I've been trying to keep my promise to Henry, but it's been difficult.

Archie: To not use?
Regina: It's been two day.
Archie: That's an excellent start.

Regina: I don't care about Whale or his brother. I brought who I wanted.

Rumpel: As long as you live in the past, you'll never find your future.

Regina: This wizard - can he really bring someone back from the dead?
Jefferson: Well, if he can't no one can.

Emma: So much for fortune favoring the brave.

Regina: You're the wizard?

Dr. Whale: I brought him back. He's not dead.
Regina: What?
Dr. Whale: He's a monster.

Dr. Frankenstein: These are all hearts?
Regina: My mother was a collector.

Regina (re: Cora): She was a monster.

Regina: I came here to speak to him and discovered he was hurt. It's the truth!

Regina: No! I won't use magic on him!
Sidenote: Well, she should really say "I won't use magic on him again!" *wink*

Igor: It's magic, Dr. Frankenstein.
Victor: No, not magic. It's science.
