The Carol Burnett Show: Went With The Wind

Last night on American Masters on PBS, the spotlight was on Carol Burnett. She was one of the funniest comedians ever on television. I grew up watching The Carol Burnett Show, and there has never been a better comedy variety show. And Carol Burnett was always hilarious.

Carol Burnett grew up going to the movies with her Grandmother and sister, sometimes eight movies a week (that was in the days of the double-feature). When they got home from the movies Carol and her sister would act out the movie in their living room. When Carol eventually got her own variety show, she was given the chance to act out those movies again, but this time she has costumes, music, a great set, and other great actors.

Mildred FierceRebecky, The Torchy Song, and The Little Foxies were a few of the movie parodies that Carol did on her show. The best parody, and the one most people remember most was Went With the Wind. No one who has seen it will ever forget the first time they saw Carol, as Startlet O'Hara, coming down the staircase with the curtain draped over her. It is one of the best moments in all of television. No one, except Carol, Harvey Korman, and Bob Mackie (the costume designer) knew what was going to happen. The reaction was epic.

If you've never seen this before, you're in for a treat!
